It’s time now for the third installment of KMXT’s five-part series: Business on the Move. Each day this week KMXT will feature a local business that is changing things up in 2013.

Since 1985, Kodiak Marine Supply has provided Kodiak’s maritime and outdoor enthusiasts gear and supplies from its storefront location on Shelikof Drive. That won’t change in 2013, but the business has already expanded to a second location on Shelikof, and plans to make the complete move down the street sometime this year.

Debra Davis is the manager of KMS and said the decision to expand came as the current store started to burst at the seams. Not literally, but she said the business was no longer able to carry all of the merchandise they wanted it to. She said the store is still open at the old location, but now a second operation has opened up in the old brewery, next to Napa Auto Parts. She said the new location is carrying some of the bigger items that couldn’t fit in the old building.

It’s time now for the third installment of KMXT’s five-part series: Business on the Move. Each day this week KMXT will feature a local business that is changing things up in 2013.

Cactus Flats caters to the natural grocery needs of Kodiak and La Tienda focuses on fine cookware. But as of last week, the two shops have combined forces under one roof, and a new name: Cactus Flats Natural Foods and Fine Kitchenware.

Dean Brown said the fusion of the two stores has eliminated a lot of duplication of rent and electricity payments, and has made the task of owning two small businesses a lot more convenient. He said the intent to combine stores has been in the works for a long time.

It’s time now for the second installment of KMXT’s five-part series: Business on the Move. Each day this week KMXT will feature a local business that is changing things up in 2013.

For almost a decade and a half, Joel and Martine Chenet owned and operated Mill Bay Coffee just outside Kodiak city limits, next to Mill Bay Gas-N-Go. But less than two weeks ago the pair moved the coffee shop to a smaller location on Mill Bay Road. Chef Joel Chenet said despite moving to a busier section of town, the building downsize was intended to generate a slower pace for the shop.

It’s time now for the first installment of KMXT’s five-part series: Business on the Move. Each day this week KMXT will feature a local business that is changing things up in 2013.

The New Year is often considered a time for new beginnings, and so is the case with today’s business. A short drive across the Fred Zharoff Memorial Bridge will take you past a recently opened drive-through café, the first and only coffee shop on Near Island. Near Island Coffee is the brainchild of Jasmine Gilpin, who now manages the stand. Gilpin moved to Kodiak five months ago, and after struggling to find a job decided to make her own employment opportunities. She said she saw the vacant lots on Near Island, one that already housed a small building, and thought a coffee shop might be a needed amenity.
