Kodiak is no stranger to aspiring cannery bosses, but this week a few more than usual are in town. About 15 mid-career seafood processing professionals are attending the Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center on Near Island.
Paula Cullenburg is the director for the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, which sponsors the leadership institute, now in its fourth year. Cullenberg said in an email that participants are nominated by their companies and will spend eight days in Kodiak as part of the 21-day course. In March the group will reconvene in Anchorage for leadership trainings and then travel to the Boston Seafood Show to get a big picture view of Alaska’s role in the world seafood market.
Cullenberg said the group comes from eight Alaska communities: Seward, Unalaska, Homer, Anchorage, Petersburg, King Salmon, Wasilla and Kodiak. She said three participants are from out of state but work in Alaska.
While in Kodiak, studies cover the science of seafood, shelf life, product development and new processing technologies, among other topics.
